...My frozen tears in this empty expanse. I am alone...
Background created in Terragan for the Mac. Rendering time about 30 minutes. Snowman, shadow and border added in the Gimp on Windows. (Snowman built by my kids.)
Very cathartic to create. I hope it strikes a chord with you as well...
I can see how much time you took to make this. It's a very nice piece, and it does convey a sense of loneliness. I especially liked the ragged blurry edges around the image. Constructive criticism-wise, the shadow on the snowman opposed to the shadow on the ground seem to be at differing angles, so fixing this might help make it look less cut-and-paste. Also, the snowman is fairly sharply cut out, so perhaps some fading on its edges would give it more realism.
Keep up the good work! I can see many wonderful pieces coming in the future.
Thanks for the constructive crit. That darn shadow is such a pain. I created the background in Terragen with the sun coming from a 45 degree angle and I tried to make the shadow on the ground at the same angle. But alas, in the actual photo of the snowman, I think the sun was hitting it at more of a right angle. I suppose the best thing would've been to re-render the background before I even bothered with the sad, old snowman. To make things worse, the snowman's snow was a lot 'dirtier' than the Terragen snow. I color adjusted him, but I probably should've clean him up a bit.
What tool would you recommend using for dulling the edges of the cut-out? Smudge? Or some kind of blur mask?
Hrm.. for the edges of the snowman, I'd select a thin border around the edge, including space that isn't actually on the snowman, and then using a very VERY slight distort on it to bring out some small irregularities on the edges of the snow. Then blur it slightly so they don't stand out too sharply. I tried this once witha cutout, and it worked alright. It had to be a very high resolution to do it properly though. After messing around with images, sizing them down usually makes them look a lot better.

This newsletter was "born" back in March 2007, from a conversation between ~Lareth and =FrozenStarRo, who with the help of their friends *Iardacil and =Sylwiaa , wanted to make something to promote known and unknown photomanipulators alike here on DeviantArt. As of September 2009 =ImaginaryRosse joined the project and will be helping us out with the weekly choices. While things have changed over time, the essence of the newsletter is still the same. As of recent, the talented =Behana has joined us in bringing you this weekly newsletter and we are excited to have her on board. This is a special feature, with a selection of 50 manips from the past year that we loved.
